Welcome to In Walks a Woman, the podcast where we go down well-worn historical and literary pathways with new questions about the female experience and how the stories of our past and in our fiction frame women's life today.
If you'd like to listen to the pod like a book club, here's a list for our upcoming season so you can get your books and plan your reading schedule. We start on Friday October 10th with Atlas of Unknowable Things ...and we'll ring in the season by welcoming some special guests: Atlas author, McCormick Templeman, and her fellow author and friend, Dr. Rachel Feder, who wrote The Darcy Myth, that brilliant analysis of Pride and Prejudice that we fell in love with in Season 3.
Season 4 Books in Order:
Atlas of Unknowable Things by McCormick Templeman (Oct 7 Release date--preorder your copy now!)
The Mysteries of Udolpho by Anne Radcliffe (1794)
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (1817)
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (1847)
Dracula by Bram Stoker (1897)
Turn of the Screw by Henry James (1898)
Rebecca by Daphne De Maurier (1939)
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson (1959)
Salem’s Lot by Stephen King (1975)
Mexican Gothic by Sylvia Moreno-Garcia (2020)
Victorian Psycho by Virginia Feito (2025)
We'll be closing with a Twilight pop culture episode...so maybe spend October and November watching the movies!
BTW: reading lists from seasons 1-3 are just below the "Get in Touch" section of the website
The short answer is...all by ourselves. We got the idea in December of 2024, and Sonja found out our very own Lawrence Public Library had a studio we could reserve, and in January 2025 we launched. Sonja does all the editing, and Vanessa writes the show notes, and both do their best to wrangle social media. We dream that someday we can have a producer and someone to help us with social media...but until then, we're doing our best, loving the research, loving the times we record and discuss, and we appreciate all the positive feedback from our wonderful listeners. Thank you for supporting us!
In Walks A Woman podcast is the natural evolution of a nearly 15-year-long conversation between Sonja and Vanessa who love to talk history, literature, pop culture, and always find themselves thinking about how all these arenas are influenced by and an influence upon women.
When not in the classroom, Sonja enjoys playing in the dirt (sometimes growing vegetables), cooking, reading, and podcasting with Vanessa. Sonja and her husband Eric have two grown kids, and a diabolical tuxedo cat named Lina.
Vanessa loves a little chaos in her life, enjoys teaching middle and high school, might own a cat or two (Rusty pictured), has taught for over 25 years, has raised a daughter and a son, and adores literature and history--especially where they intersect.
